Hyalgan at PRNJAre you dreading an upcoming family vacation because of knee pain? Are you unable to fathom the idea of walking around a theme park or even a city with friends or loved ones because your knee gives you so much pain? Knee pain is a common symptom in people of all ages and many times can be caused by osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis, affecting millions of people around the world. It is often called the “wear and tear arthritis” as it occurs when the protective cartilage on the ends of your bones wears down over time.

If you are like most people and want to avoid long-term use of medication or postpone surgery to your knee, Hyalgan injections may be the right treatment option for you.  Normal joint fluid contains a substance called hyaluronan. This acts like a shock absorber and lubricant for your joint and is needed to help the joint work properly. Hyaluronan is very resilient fluid, which helps the cartilage surfaces of the bones to glide upon each other smoothly. The Hyalgan injection is made up of this substance, which helps lessen the symptoms of osteoarthritis.

The injections are usually given as a series over the course of a few weeks. Initially the knee is examined and the injection site is determined. The area is then cleaned with a sterile solution and a local anesthetic is used to numb the skin. If there is any existing fluid within the joint, it is withdrawn. When the knee is ready, the Hyalgan injection is given utilizing high definition computer guidance. Once the procedure is complete a Band-Aid is applied and you are free to return to your normal routine.
